Topic: New Hires - Getting it Right from the Start: A bad employee can cause many issues in a company, most of them unpleasant. For example, hiring one bad employee can result in poor overall productivity, low morale and even lawsuits. You will find that HR spends 90% of its time on 10% of employees, most of who should not have been hired in the first place. Thus, initial hiring decisions can the most the most important ones companies make. This program will discuss how to best position yourself to make good hiring decisions to hopefully avoid the consequence of bringing on bad employees.

Presenter: Tom Birchfield, J.D., Managing Partner Fisher & Phillips LLP

BIO: Tom Birchfield is the managing partner of the Louisville office, which he helped open for the firm in 2009. Prior to 2009, he was the chairperson of the labor and employment practice group of a large regional law firm. Tom has represented employers exclusively for over 22 years in federal and state courts and before various administrative agencies throughout the nation. Tom assists employers with their employment practices liability prevention efforts by conducting training, counseling, reviewing and revising policies and preparing severance agreements. Tom also represents companies in collective bargaining, arbitrations and proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board.

Topic: Social Media-What does it mean for the employers: We will look at statistics and trends, consider legitimate uses of social media as well as some of the issues and land mines. Cases will be discussed and we will answer questions regarding what an employer can and cannot do.

Presenter: Shannon Antle Hamilton, J.D., Member and Chief Talent Officer with Stites & Harbison, PLLC

BIO: Shannon Hamilton is a seasoned litigator and counselor on complex employment law issues. She is currently Stites & Harbison’s Chief Talent Officer. She is also the co-chair of the firm’s Employment Service Group and a former chair of the Diversity Committee. She was recognized in the 2006-2013 Chambers USA, America’s Leading Lawyers in Business, in the 2007-2012 Kentucky Super Lawyers magazines, and is listed in Louisville Magazine’s Top Lawyers for 2013.Shannon is also the General Counsel of Women 4 Women, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and economic well-being of women and girls in the Louisville area.
